Psychological Support Services for Chronic Pain Management in Collaboration with Bill Nelems Centre

The clinical psychology graduate program at UBC’s Okanagan campus offers psychological services provided by graduate student clinicians who are closely supervised by a registered psychologist
The primary aim of this service is to help patients develop the skills they need to live a rich and meaningful life despite the challenges of living with chronic pain. Interventions are grounded in cutting-edge research and include cognitive behavioural therapy and mindfulness and acceptance-based therapies.This service specializes in the treatment of depression, anxiety, stress, and difficulties with pain self-management. Treatment is administered in individual or group formats. Individual therapy consists of an initial intake and 10-12 sessions of one-on-one support that can be delivered in person or via video-conferencing.

Group therapy options are listed below and are provided via video conferencing.

Services are on a sliding fee scale based on income, with the exception of Making Sense of Pain, which is free.


Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Mood & Chronic Pain (8 weeks)
BEST FOR: Patients struggling with depression, anxiety, and difficulty managing pain.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (6 weeks)
BEST FOR: Patients struggling with insomnia who want to increase their sleep quality and duration

Making Sense of Pain – Pain Self-Management (10 weeks)
ONLY FOR: Patients who experience marginalization and/or face barriers to accessing care, including financial hardship. Focuses on pain education and supported self-management.
