Aboriginal Supported Child Development

Provided by Carrier Sekani Family Services

Supports children and youth (aged 0-18) with developmental delays, with or without a diagnosis. For children, youth, and families living in Takla, Yekooche, Stellaquo, Saik'uz, Fraser Lake, Vanderhoof, and Nadleh Whut'en.
The Aboriginal Supported Child Development (ASCD) program supports any children or youth from 0-18 years old with developmental delays, including speech and language delays, fine motor delays, gross motor delays, cognitive delays, and social, emotional and behavioural delays.

Children do not need a diagnosis to access the ASCD programs; however, some children already may have diagnosis such as down syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism spectrum disorder, fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD), deaf or hard of hearing, visually impaired, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), speech disorders such as apraxia, and complex health care needs, and are welcome to receive supports.

The goals of the program are for children with developmental delays to:
  • Receive support in developing their skills
  • Receive one-on-one support throughout their early childhood, when needed
  • Receive timely assessments, when applicable
And for parents whose children are developmentally delayed or may be developmentally delayed to:
  • Learn new parenting skills
  • Find ways to develop a meaningful connection with their child
  • Know that they are not alone and that resources are available to assist them
Eligibility: Children with special needs living in Takla, Yekooche, Stellaquo, Saik'uz, Fraser Lake, Vanderhoof, and Nadleh Whut'en are eligible for services. The service schedule is determined based on client needs and availability and may change on a week-to-week basis. Any family or care providers who have a concern that a child has a developmental delay in any domain may refer children to the ASCD program.

Referral Instructions: Referral form can be obtained through the CSFS Vanderhoof office. Referrals from professionals must have parental consent. Children do not need a diagnosis such as Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism spectrum disorder, fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD), deaf or hard of hearing, visually impaired, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), speech disorders such as apraxia, and complex health care needs, and are welcome to receive supports.
